Ancestor Painting of Children: This painting is dated 1853 and the children in the painting are the Winter children of Montgomery, AL, The history of the painting was attached and follows: the children's parents were Joseph Winter and his wife Elizabeth Gindrat Winter, The little girl in the picture is Lucy Winter, later becoming Lucy Lahey (1849-1920) and the boy is John Gindrat Winter, (1846-1904). Owners of the painting from then until now: Mrs. Davis Stakley, Elizabeth Gindrat Foster and Mrs. George Smith; Lyra Nickerson Foster and finally Alice Lahey Smith Nyberg who is now Alice Stafford. The estate we are currently doing belongs to Alice Starrod. The painting has some flaking on the canvas - these are more like "spots" than paint loss. The frame is beautiful with one tiny area on a corner that has a piece missing - easily repaired. The painting measures 46" by 36". The artist Is Joseph Thoits Moore (1796-1854). Moore moved to Montgomery around 1830 and was known to have painted 400-450 portrait paintings and became the leading painter of this regions elite. The pier mirror was a part of the Winter family's estate.
