A HISTORIC LOS ANGELES ESTATE SALE

The Extraordinary Collection of Dr. William Burke and the Honorable Yvonne Brathwaite Burke

MELROSE TREASURES ESTATE SALES — MANDEVILLE CANYON, LOS ANGELES

Melrose Treasures Estate Sales is honored to present one of the most historically fascinating estates we have had the privilege of handling.

Located in the beautiful Mandeville Canyon neighborhood of Los Angeles, this extraordinary residence was the longtime home of two prominent figures in California history: Dr. William “Bill” Burke, founder of the Los Angeles Marathon, and his wife, the Honorable Yvonne Brathwaite Burke, a pioneering civil rights leader and former United States congresswoman.

Dr. Burke founded the Los Angeles Marathon in 1986 following the success of the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games, where he served as tennis commissioner.

Yvonne Brathwaite Burke broke historic barriers as the first African American woman elected to the California State Assembly in 1966 and the first African American woman elected to Congress from California in 1972. She later served for many years on the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors and played an important role in organizing the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics.

Together, their lives intersected with some of the most influential personalities and defining moments of twentieth-century American history.

AN EXTRAORDINARY COLLECTION OF HISTORICAL MEMORABILIA

Among the remarkable discoveries are personal photographs, political memorabilia, correspondence, and archival materials documenting decades of public service, historic events, and friendships.

The collection includes photographs associated with prominent political leaders, civil rights figures, and Hollywood personalities, including President Ronald Reagan, President Bill Clinton, Sidney Poitier, Jesse Jackson, and Muhammad Ali.

We have also uncovered fascinating historical family photographs dating back generations, along with political campaign memorabilia, congressional materials, and personal archives reflecting an extraordinary American family history.

Additional highlights include 1984 Los Angeles Olympic torches carried by the Burkes, Los Angeles Marathon memorabilia, and collectibles associated with legendary boxing champion Muhammad Ali.

And perhaps most exciting of all, we are still discovering what this remarkable collection contains!

FINE ART, ANTIQUES, DESIGNER FASHIONS & ESTATE TREASURES

Beyond the historical memorabilia, this beautiful residence is filled with an exceptional variety of merchandise for collectors, decorators, antique enthusiasts, and everyday treasure hunters.

Highlights include:

  1. Grand piano and fine furnishings
  2. Original paintings, sculptures, and signed Muhammad Ali artwork
  3. Lalique crystal and decorative art glass
  4. Sterling silver, vintage jewelry, and collectible coins
  5. Chanel, Prada, and Bottega Veneta handbags
