Description & Details
Edith Kramer (1916-2014) was an Austrian born artist and pioneering figure in art therapy. She fled Nazi persecution and built a legacy blending social realism painting with psychoanalytic principles.
Born in Vienna in 1916, Kramer started art training at age 13 under Friedl Dicker, a Bauhaus graduate. She followed Dicker to Prague in 1934, where she first observed art's therapeutic effects on refugee children. With fear of the Nazi invasion, Kramer fled to New York City in 1938.
In New York, she taught sculpture at the Little Red School House which was one of the city's first progressive schools. She also worked as a machinist during World War II. This industrial experience honed in on her Bauhaus education which led to sketching social realist scenes of workers and machinery. At 33, she joined Wiltwyck School For Boys as a teacher, applying Freudian sublimation - channeling destructive urges into creative art - to help troubled youth. Kramer is best known for her work as a pioneer in the field of Art Therapy. In 1971 she was part of the team that established an Art Therapy program at George Washington University, and she created the graduate program in Art Therapy at New York University in 1973.
Edith taught at NYU until 2005 and earned honors like the American Art Therapy Association's Lifetime Membership. Edith returned to Austria before her death in 2014.
- The pieces presented in this auction are rare and unique in a sense that they are coming directly from private collections closely related to Kramer's estate. As you can see, many of the pieces are directly from a sketch pad, or used readily available resources to capture the moment, and have a raw unique history along with the art itself. The focus piece of this auction is the mixed media mural which was a pre-curser to the actual collage installed in the New York subway entrance. Many of the other pieces provide support and a gateway into the style of art Kramer was known for.
- A certificate of authenticity will be provided with each piece.
