Myyellowbird.com is pleased to offer the Estate of Ruby Meaders Irvin of Cleveland, GA. This is truly a Fabulous Piece of Georgia History!!! Ruby was the youngest daughter of Cheever and Arie Meaders.
In the winter of 1892 John Milton Meaders established a pottery shop near Cleveland, GA. With the help of six sons, Wiley, Cleater, Casey, Cauider, L.Q., and Cheever they began to supply the citizens of North Georgia useful, sturdy, utilitarian vessels.
During that era the Mossy Creek Community boasted 19 pottery shops. What was once as a common sight, is now a vanishing art form. The Meaders are one of the last remaining traditional Folk Potteries left in the United States. Beginning with locally dug stoneware clay, foot powered treadle wheel wood fired tunnel kiln and techniques learned from trial and error, passed down by word of mouth from generation to generation. Meaders Pottery today remains virtually unchanged from the original family operation.
As many of the old ways and crafts of Southern Appalachian are vanishing in their last days, the Meaders are continuing to preserve a portion of our American Heritage. Today, Meaders Pottery is exhibited nationally at the Smithsonian Institute, the Museum of Georgia Folk Culture and with the Atlanta Historical Society.
The Collection offered in Ruby’s estate consists of a number of Ruby’s pieces as well as examples from Cheever, Arie, Reggie, John and other family members as well as the Deans and Fergusons. Around 100 pieces in all.
There are three Kilns (large, medium, small), pottery-making supplies, and many fine things from Ruby’s estate.
