Description & Details
Benson Estate Sales presents an historic Family multi-generational collection drawn from two legendary Georgia addresses: Twin Oaks, the c. 1855 National Register Greek Revival estate in Greenville, GA., and Rhodes Hall — the iconic "castle on Peachtree Street" that served as the Georgia State Archives from 1930 to 1965. The collection comes to you in part from that of Louise Frederick Hays (1881–1951), the wife of Senator James E. Hays. Louise was Georgia's State Archivist and Historian, the first woman in the United States to receive an honorary degree for volunteer work, and one of the most consequential figures in the preservation of Georgia's documentary heritage. She lived at Rhodes hall from 1939 until 1951 many of these pieces are from her collection passed down through the generations. Her daughter Louese Frederick Hays Gaston and son-in-law Dr. Joseph H. Gaston lll M.D. Then to their son Dr. J. Harper Gaston M.D. and his wife Anne Elizabeth Hendrick Gaston M.D.
Drs. Anne and Harper Gaston were pioneers in their respective fields. Anne was one of only two women in her graduating class at Emory Medical School, while Harper became a noted cardiologist and founding director of the Southeast Kaiser Permanente Medical Group. Following their distinguished careers, the couple retired to Twin Oaks, their historic home in Greenville, Georgia. With great care and dedication, they restored the property to its former grandeur, earning it a place on the National Register of Historic Places. At Twin Oaks, Anne’s refined eye and impeccable taste guided the couple in assembling an extraordinary collection of beautiful antiques and collectibles.
Carefully held in private storage for many years, this remarkable collection has never before been offered for sale. These collections include antique and vintage furniture, art, paintings, jewelry, costume jewelry, vintage designer clothing, fine porcelains and crystal, silver, antique lighting, decorative arts, rare books, historic maps, and major bodies of Louise Frederick Hays' personal archive and research materials. Everyone is welcome and are encouraged to attend the sale.
