The Richard Hartnagle house is a great interest from the architectural historians view. Samuel Smith built this original house in the summer of 1829. It is believed to be the first frame and brick dwelling in Chester. Amaze Andrews built the first brick house in Chester in 1935 it was situated on the bank of the river and a steamboat demolished it in 1844. Samuel Smith was the founder of Chester and it was called Smith’s Landing before being named Chester by Samuel‘s wife, Jane Thomas Smith. She came from Chester England along with this Swanwick family, and she gave Chester the name of her hometown. Samuel operated a ferry service that had begun building a mill also in 1829 at Chester.
