This design was showcased at the 1964 World’s Fair in New York City as an example of American modern furniture. With two external shelves, locking side cabinet doors and resting on legs with casters, this table’s white laminate top swings open to reveal an inside compartment with a mechanical tray: just pull up on the brass handles which lock the tray into place at table height. Signed lower right and in an ornate gilt frame bearing a small plaque with the title “A Sussex Landscape” and artist's name. José Weiss (1859-1919) was a talented Paris-born landscape painter who settled in England in 1893; his works were exhibited at the Royal Academy, RBA, and the Paris Salon. On the reverse is a label from the Cooling Galleries in London, which was opened circa 1884 by John Albert Cooling.
