Majolica
- More than 100 pieces of antique majolica from a wonderful collection, including:
- An English majolica pitcher by Minton circa 1871, moulded ovoid body in a cobalt blue ground and raised deep yellow quatrefoil florets, loop handle rising to a masked spout; incised Minton mark, incised style #596, incised #12, incised date code (NC).
- An American majolica pitcher circa 1880-90; heavy cast, molded pitcher with raised cranes painted white against a cobalt blue background against a low brick wall; four borders of tan bamboo, top/bottom rim and end handle also of bamboo design.
- A rare Minton Majolica "Tower" jug or tankard, 13” H, featuring medieval dancing scene and a jester finial on the pewter mounted lid. Designed by Hugues Protat, one of the most highly regarded majolica artists at Minton. Moulded cylindrical body representing facade of a castle w/dancing medieval men and women in relief between two bands of twining ivy stems which extend to form the handle. The base w/impressed “MINTON”, factory mark, date mark for 1869, and numerals '1231'.
- A stunning antique Minton Majolica chestnut server, round in shape with low pedestal base, attached half covered dome lid modeled as leaves of varying shades of green and brown, with applied spreading nut shell holding raised tan color nut within it, scalloped edge in gold with green leaf/white dot flower design ending in rolled grip handle, turquoise liner, 11-1/2" diameter by 7” H, impressed maker's marks for the Minton pottery and a pattern number, '694'. Circa 1860s-1880s.
- Three late 19th century Majolica plates and bowls in the Etruscan Shell/Seaweed pattern by Griffin, Smith & Hill; marked on base with impressed double circle trademark Etruscan Majolica GHS, circa 1880-90.
- An unusual c. 1880 antique majolica earthenware egg basket or caddy w/round openings for 6 eggs, nicely molded w/raised wild rose pattern along sides and top, white and pink flowers w/green leaves, high arching bark handle in green; 7-1/2" diameter, origin and potter unknown.
- A large majolica earthenware pitcher with raised figure of a bird resting on leafy branches, richly glazed/hand painted in mottled/streaking background of shades of green and brown; bird has black wings and head with deep rose breast; brown branch handle and lavender liner. 9-1/4 inch high.
- A rare antique Etruscan Majolica bowl circa 1880 from classical series of mythological scenes, design of child nymph on racing horse in intaglio depression colored in green transparent glaze, border of raised brown lacing branches and green leaves, impressed monogram GHS and five point star mark, 9-3/4" W.
- A majolica pitcher circa 1880-90, pitcher of high glazed green ground in shape of cauliflower leaves being laced together by high relief bird; birds are hand colored in cobalt blue, deep pink, green, yellow. Brown bark handle and lavender liner. 7-1/2 inch tall.
