Hanaogi of the Ogiya from series Renowned Beatuie likened to the Six Immortal Poets (Komei bijin rokkagen) Woodblock print on gompi washi paper. Utamaro was a Japanese printmaker and painter who was one of the greatest artists of the ukiyo-e movement; he is known especially for his masterfully composed portraits of sensuous female beauties. In about 1791 Utamaro concentrated on making half-length single portraits of women rather than prints of women in groups as favoured by other ukiyo-e artists. In 1804, at the height of his success, he made some prints depicting the military ruler Toyotomi Hideyoshi’s wife and concubines. Consequently, he was accused of insulting Hideyoshi’s dignity and was ordered to be handcuffed for 50 days. The experience crushed him emotionally and ended his career as an artist. Among his best known works are the wood-block-print series Fu ninsōgaku jittai (Ten Physiognomies of Women), Seirō jūni-toki (Twelve Hours at the Gay Quarters), Seirō nana komachi (The Seven Beauties of the Gay Quarters), and Kasen koi no fu (Women in Love). In this intimate spring scene, the branches of a leafy laden nandina plant, whose bright red berries are visible amidst the leaves, provide a canopy for a pair of mandarin ducks approaching the shoreline. Because mandarin ducks were thought to mate for life, they were symbols of conjugal fidelity, and this painting can be assumed to celebrate such a theme or express wishes for marital bliss for newlyweds. Its appeal, however, lies in the way it presents an auspicious subject in such a manner as to allow the viewer to experience the lyricism of a pure verdant setting, masterfully suggesting the lure of the water and approaching swim.

Keibun was the younger brother of Matsumura Gekkei, otherwise known as Goshun, the founder of the Shijō school of painting. Keibuns work combines realistic representation based upon shasei (drawing from nature), for which Goshun was known, with a poetic quality most evident in his depictions of natural scenery and the passing of seasons.
