Very large and used in formal halls or throne rooms. One of a matching pair (lot M001B). This censer has a dragon motif and decorative elements found in the handles, design, and ornamental top, as well as inlaid gem stones. Both dragons and phoenixes are heavily associated with the imperial family, to the extent that the throne upon which the emperor sat was referred to as the dragon throne, and are also often depicted side by side in art, whether that be paintings or pottery, and even in how they relate to the imperial family. To be in the presence of these massive ceremonial censers, which are rarely seen by outsiders, was breathtaking and humbling. These are true treasures worthy of any museum or grand estate. This very rare wooden 19th century Napoleon ||| frame with intact glass accompanies Van Gogh’s smoking skull making it a beautiful and unique decorative object. At that time (1886) Van Gogh couldn't know the dangers of smoking. His joke was simply that skulls don’t smoke. It was his way to show the teachers at the academy in Antwerp that he preferred emotion to technique. In Antwerp Van Gogh had clearly studied anatomy carefully as well though. A step in his development as a painter. Next step would be influenced by impressionists in Paris. The frame is in very good condition with some signs of aging. A Rare Cloisonne Enamel Luduan-form Censer - Qianlong Period (1736 - 1795) Four Character Mark The sturdy beast is superbly cast standing square, with a rotund body enamelled with finely shaded teal ground with ornate foilate strap work over the body, and gilt bronze accents. The head is modelled with bulging eyes and a snout-like nose, displaying a tongue between sets of sharp teeth below pricked ears and a single horn. The curling and flared mane spreads the length of its ridged spine towards the curly tail. The mythical creature is standing atop a scaled serpent. L: 30.5, W: 23, H: 37 CM
