Pair of elegant antique Victorian era Eastlake-Style upholstered side chairs
Sold by Connecticut Art And Estate Sales
Eastlake furniture is a Victorian-era style of furniture named after British architect Charles Eastlake, characterized by its geometric patterns, simpler lines, and emphasis on the beauty of natural wood grain, which was a reaction against the more ornate and heavy styles of the time. Key features include rectilinear shapes, incised linear or geometric carving, and construction from woods like oak, cherry, or walnut.
Inspiration and philosophy: The style was inspired by Charles Eastlake's 1868 book, Hints on Household Taste, which advocated for furniture that was less ostentatious and more practical. It embraced the principles of the Arts and Crafts movement, favoring craftsmanship and honest materials over excessive decoration.
Eastlake furniture is often made from sturdy hardwoods such as oak, cherry, rosewood, or walnut. A defining characteristic is the emphasis on the natural wood grain, which Eastlake encouraged by recommending oiled finishes rather than heavy stains or varnishes.
Decorative elements: While simpler than many other Victorian styles, Eastlake furniture is not devoid of ornamentation. Decorations are typically geometric or nature-inspired, such as carved leaves and acorns, and are often applied in low relief or incised linear patterns rather than deep, elaborate carvings.
