Jean-François Millet antique "engraving" photogravure of the famous 1857 painting "The Gleaners"

This historicis piece is a work of the Realism movement and depicts three impoverished peasant women performing the laborious task of gleaning, or collecting the leftover stalks of wheat after a harvest. Millet's sympathetic portrayal of the lowest ranks of rural society was controversial at the time and poorly received by the French upper classes, who viewed it as a political statement in the aftermath of the 1848 revolution.
The scene contrasts the hard labor of the gleaners in the foreground with the abundant and busy harvest in the distance, which includes large haystacks and a steward on horseback supervising the work. The original painting is housed at the Musée d'Orsay in Paris, France.
