The bed is of a style from the Chinese countryside and is made of cypress and decorated with delicate and finely executed ink drawings. It differs from the better-known opium beds not only in its casual style but for its purpose. This bed was a retreat for a young newlywed couple when they were first married and still living with family before they had a house of their own. The drawers stored their belongings, and the hooks held their clothes. The bed was draped to give the young couple privacy at night.

This bed dates to the late 1800’s and was purchased in Singapore in 1986 from an American woman who had lived as an ex-pat throughout the Pacific basin for 20 years. She had amassed an extensive collection of treasures with the intention of retiring to Texas and opening an antique shop. I pre-shopped the collection in Singapore, selecting items to be shipped to Atlanta.
