This same print "Tulipa aurei colois" was auctioned a few years ago by Nadeau's Auction Gallery, the final price being $508. This hand colored botanical engraving is from a work called Hortus Eystettensis by Basilius Besler 1561-1629, who was a Nuremberg apothecary and botanist. Besler was commissioned by Bishop, Johann Konrad von Gemmingen (1561-1612) to produce this work through the assistance of his brother and a group of skilled German draftsmen and engravers. This 16 year project was very momentous at the time as being far superior informationally and aesthetically to any previous botanical works. We have a matching engraving to this one B75, Cruciata. They are both in fine condition and nicely matted/framed.
