Sold B98 Two 17th Century Map Engravings of Manila
Sold by Lee’s Trinkets
$60.00
These are two woodcut engraving maps from a voyage by Joris van Spilbergen (1568-1620) and Jacob Le Maire (1585-1616) done 1614 -1617. This voyage was commissioned by the Dutch East India Company. There was a publication of their voyage from 1906, but I believe this map is from a time closer to their voyage (late 17th century). A pencil note within the framing of the other map that we have (B97) says circa 1690. There was a publishing of this voyage in 1683 by French cartographer Alain Manesson Mallet (1630–1706). If this item were authenticated it could be very valuable. All in all, it is a terrific piece in Dutch colonial history. The other map engraving of the journey we have availible, B97, matches the size and framing of this one.
