1906 Bing & Grondahl Christmas plate

1906 Bing & Grondahl Christmas plate Sleighing to Church on Christmas Eve by Dahl Jensen, 7", no box, no certificate, indent on back.

The plate pictures a farmer and his daughter on their way to church by sleigh. Formerly sleighs were very much in use in the remote parts of Denmark, but today betters roads and the introduction of the automobile and other modes of transportation have made the sleigh obsolete.

The church shown on this plate is the Faarevejle Church in the northwestern part of Zealand. This typical village church has become famous because it contains a glass-topped casket that holds the remarkably well-preserved body of the Earl of Bothwell.

Mary, Queen of Scots, in 1565 married her cousin Henry Stuart, or Lord Darnely. Soon thereafter James Hepburn, Earl of Bothwell, fell in love with Mary. In 1567 Lord Darnely was murdered and the Earl of Bothwell was accused of having had something to do with the murder. However, he was acquitted after a trial. Bothwell then kidnapped Mary and made her his wife. The Scots were not please about this turn of events and Mary was imprisoned, while Bothwell fled the country. First he went to the Orkney Islands, of which Mary had made him the Duke, and later to Norway where he was captured. He was confined to Malmo Castle in Southern Sweden. The marriage was later dissolved by the Pope. In 1573 Bothwell was transferred to Dragsholm Castle where he was imprisoned until he died 5 years later completely insane. The body of Bothwell was disinterred about 100 years ago and found to be in fine state of preservation. It was placed in a glass-topped casket in nearby Faarevegle Church.
