Ensrud learned many lessons from Oskar Kokoschka and it is evident in his work. For
Kokoschka, the purpose of art is communicating feeling by touching the human center
of emotion. A piece of art must have an emotional impact that’s felt by any observer.
Ensrud is motivated the feelings brought up by image, memory, dream, nostalgia, or
even love, which require visual representation. Early in his career, Ensrud realized that
he needed to be on a communicative wavelength with a larger audience, which led him
towards abstract painting as his medium.
