Translation: The Case of Conscience

Quellier was a French realist painter. He started painting at the age of 11 and joined the
National School of Fine Arts. During the Occupation, he followed the work of
choreographer Katherine Dunham with whom he collaborated for the sets but also to
take sketches of the dancers.

Insensitive to modern art, he is interested in arts and realizes in 1961 a series of 104
paintings devoted to mime Marceau. From his studio in Montmartre, he prepares
exhibitions throughout France and the world (Japan, New YHork, London, Moscow,
Leningrad, and Tehran.) In addition to portraits and subjects related to the performing
arts, landscapes and still lifes are among the main subjects of his work.

This painting may have been inspired by a poem written by Jean de La Fontaine called
The Man and his Image.
