Known as a modernist painter born to café owners in Paris. At an early age, he showed
interest in art, even skipping school to visit the Louvre Museum. He took painting
classes at the Academie des Beaux-Arts and was trained as a draftsman at an
architecture firm. In 1921, he exhibited at the Salon des Independents for the first time.

As an artist he was influenced by Vincent van Gogh, and expressed through his use of
pure color and expressive brushwork. He was a close friend of Utrillo. In 1931, he
became a knight of the Legion of Honour and in the same year, received a silver medal
at the International Exhibition in Paris.
